Boutique hotels are the chain antidote: 20–80 rooms, all individual, often in period buildings or converted industrial spaces. Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg is the boutique mecca, but Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg also have outstanding hotels.
What to watch for with boutique hotels in Berlin
Boutique hotels in Berlin are rarely new builds - the interesting ones sit in period buildings, former factories, substations or breweries. That is exactly the appeal and the catch: room sizes and layouts can differ considerably within the same hotel.
With small properties it pays to check the details chains standardize: 24-hour reception, elevator, air conditioning and weekend breakfast times. If you can live with that, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg give you noticeably more character for the same money.
