Marzahn-Hellersdorf is the eastern district of Plattenbau housing, the prefabricated concrete apartment blocks East Germany built by the thousand. It is also home to the Gärten der Welt (Gardens of the World), one of the prettiest parks in the city. Hotels here are among the cheapest in Berlin, with solid S-Bahn and U-Bahn links into the center.

Marzahn-Hellersdorf stands for the big East German prefab housing estates, and for the Gärten der Welt (Gardens of the World), a park of more than 100 acres with Chinese, Japanese, Oriental and Balinese gardens. The cable car above the grounds dates from the 2017 garden show and still runs today.
On price the district sits at the bottom end of the Berlin scale, and the supply is mostly budget and chain properties along the main arteries. The S7 and U5 take around 30 minutes into Mitte, reasonable for longer stays, impractical for two nights with a packed schedule.
